This book is beautiful, perfect but too short, worst of all because he died and interrupted his mature development, but also because Greene did not feel up to doing many of them justice. I've got a selected Merwin as well, also very short (not too short, but makes you long for the completed it's so perfect) and sometimes i preferred one translation, sometimes the other - Greene is good if you speak British English as there's no 'candy' etc and he chooses elegant classical formal language that feels more right for Mandelstam but although Merwin chooses smoother more relaxed language, yet sometimes bizarrely being less formal than Greene (=i think Merwin's a pretty cold-languaged person) is more lyrical. At other times the very meaning of the poem - especially one about staying indoors during winter, which is nice in one poem and a sort of death in the other translation - changes completely. I have read this obsessively, it won't affect the average punter, but as i love this kind of poetry - like Moerike and Pilinszky translated by Hughes and so on - i ended up copying out some poems with lines from both, as i preferred them. The Greene translations include some bona fide masterpieces, and Merwin openly inserted images which weren't there, the first reason i bought this, so i reckon this is as good as the Merwin if you don't know, and i don't know about overall. This might be the one to get, because the Merwin/Brown is complete (Brown did the donkey-work of translating from the Russian to literal) so if you loved Mandelstam you wouldn't end up with M/B selected and complete.

What sort of reader's going to love this book? If you like great and beautiful literature type poetry, like Rilke and Moerike and other romantic-formalist very strong and very beautiful stuff. There isn't a lot of persecution poetry, and he's not that good at it (he died a horrid death in a Stalin prison camp) the early stuff is light and slight, gentle wistful poems about afternoons in the past and being a child, but perfect of this kind ("Throw out all the clocks" or similar begins one on childhood) then there are some astoundingly beautiful poems and a lot of very formal ones referencing greek myths, some of which catch fire for me and some of which don't - there's one about a kiss bristley like a necklace of dead bees (i can't remember where that came from, but it's unforgettable) but the one eg about being a shell on the sea shore... it's sort of 'read it and die' of beauty and awe.

My edition is beautifully printed: clear black print, not the modern smudged photocopy light grey, and a poem a page not crammed in to make max room. I think my one's Carcanet or another poetry publisher, who are usually okay like that. (Why bindings are now works of art whilst the print is illegible is beyond my comprehension.)
